With vines that are over 25 years in age Ata Rangi has been in the Pinot Noir stakes for quite some time. The 2006 Pinot Noir reflects the quality of fruit that comes from mature vines and an experienced winemaker who knows his vineyards and has the experience with the varietal to know how to work with the grape. This is a fuller bodied Pinot Noir with a core of vibrant cherry fruit with some smoky, savory spice notes from well managed, high quality oak. It has a captivating mouth feel and texture, with outstanding structure, sweetly fruited, refined and quite stylish, displaying exceptional pedigree. The only thing it needs is several more of bottle age to really show its full potential. Ata Rangi is regarded as being in the upper echelon when it comes to New Zealand Pinot Noir and this, the 2006 vintage, is very impressive and solidifies this wineries position as one of that country’s finest in terms of the varietal.
