You see a fair amount of Malbec from old vine fruit that is quite impressive out of Mendoza, but some renditions are more notable than others, having that extra palate presence that separates them from the rest. This 2005 Malbec from Benegas is sourced from vines from 40 – 60 years old. The end result is low yields, around 2-3 tons per hectare, creating a wine of deep color, intensely fruited and beautifully structured. Perfumed, almost floral, with dense mulberry and blackberry fruits there is a subtle toast and loam undertone that adds a complimentary complexity to the package. This has exceptional depth to the fruit with well defined tannins that firm up this fuller bodied wine on the back end. This should evolve nicely over the next 5-6 years.
