Beyerskloof’s Synergy is a blend of Pinotage (45%), Cabernet Sauvignon (29%) and Merlot (26%) which creates the classic Cape Blend. The Cape Blend is a new category that is a work in progress in terms of using Pinotage in a blend with other noble cultivars. The 2003 Synergy is quite engaging aromatically with spicy red and black fruits infused with some perfumed lift and more savory, cedar, herb and leather tones, with even a hint of cocoa rising up underneath. Medium to medium-fuller bodied this has some mid palate juiciness to it that is held in check with a dryer cast to the fruit on the finish. A wine that can be defined as having Old World elegance yet embodied with New World fruit weight this offers flavors of plum, and cassis nuanced with some well integrated herb and spice inflections that give it character. The tannins are finer grained and slightly griping leading to a dry finish with a subtle end note of herb and charcoal which makes this a perfect match for some grilled meat with some fat content.

Gutsy, with well-layered notes of currant, cedar, coffee, mineral and tobacco backed by a muscular structure. Dark fruit and beefy notes on the finish. Quite solid, if lacking a bit of purity. Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2007. 2,000 cases imported.
