88 pts Wine Enthusiast - Editors Pick A lovely nose of violets and soft berries leads on this stylish Shiraz. On the plate, luscious berry, pepper and minerals mingle together with elegance. The finish is long and clean.
87 pts Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate Eventide is the second label for the Mischa estate, and their 2005 Shiraz Eventide offers generous aromas and flavors of cassis, prune, and beef jerky. Quite densely-concentrated for a wine of its price, its sheer ripeness runs no danger of becoming simply sweet, as there is plenty of verve and saline brightness as well as a fine-grained frame of tannin. A faintly warm, drying note slightly dampened my enthusiasm in the finish. |
Winemaker Notes |
Grapes were hand picked, crushed into open fermenter where they were cold soaked for five days, then during fermentation punched down by hand six times a day. Skins gently pressed and racked into barrels for twelve months with one racking at six months then given a light filtration pre-bottling. We endeavour to bring our fruit to the bottle in the most direct and pure fashion possible, and in this way express our terrior.
This 12 year old vineyard is planted on a southern slope. To maintain the integrity of our fruit, all our grapes are harvested by hand into small lug boxes, and transported directly to the winery. All our vineyards are planted high density and have low to very low yields and are managed according to minimal intervention philosophy.
Clonal Information: The SH1 clone has its origins in the 1970’s and has consistently proven its ability to produce fine wines. In the vineyard the SH1 clone displays aboe average vigour while giving average production with less compact bunches. The most noticeable characteristic of wines produced from the SH1 clone is the smokey, berry taste on the palate.
Rootstock 101-14: 101-14 is one of the rootstocks particularly suited to the soil types found on Mischa Estate. It provides early ripening of the cultivar grafted onto it, yet still allows the development of good colour and sugar levels. In the warm Wellington summer earlier ripening provides relief from the intense February heat that can have adverse effects on the grapes. We endeavour to bring our fruit to the bottle in the most direct and pure fashion possible, and in this way express our terrior. |
