Altocedro Ano Cero Malbec 2022

Tasting Notes

Currant, violet, dried-herb and grilled-meat aromas. It is medium-to-full-bodied with silky tannins. Juicy and richly flavored.

We have a long and storied history with Karim Mussi, the face behind the Atlocedro label. We first met Kareem back in 2003 on a visit to Argentina. At the time Kareem had just started his Altocedro project in the La Consulta area of the southern Uco Valley. Moving forward a few years the wines of Altocedro have established themselves as offering exceptional quality with value. Kareem’s wines are broad and generous but also beautifully balanced. Consistency in over delivering quality has been the hallmark of Altocedro, which has been proven out over the years with the strong critical third party reviews doled out by numerous wine entities.

Altocedro Malbec 2022

2023 Decanter World Wine Awards Gold Medal 95 pts
Lovely bouquet on the nose, displaying scents of violets, pink pepper and lots of pristine and fresh black fruit aromas. Well resolved tannins, fluid palate. Gold Medal. Top Value.

91 pts James Suckling
Violets, dark cherries, blackberries, plums and mushrooms on the nose. It’s full-bodied with gently chewy tannins and a youthful core of dark fruit and flowers. A little tight. Better in 2024.

90+ pts Wine Advocate
The 2022 Año Cero Malbec fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats, and one-third of the volume matured in French and American oak barrels for 10 months. It’s ripe without excess at 14.3% alcohol. They look for typicity of La Consulta using grapes from different subzones there, ripe fruit and juiciness with a touch of earthiness. It’s very juicy, and that’s their idea.

Winemaker Notes

Altocedro was founded in 1999 by visionary Karim Mussi. Third generation Lebanese immigrant, Karim and his family pioneered La Consulta, Uco Valley as a special place to make “born and raised” wines. Altocedro is synonymous with outstanding La Consulta wine. Original old vine rootstocks, indigenous yeasts, hundred year-old concrete fermentation tanks, and Karim’s minimalist winemaking create true terroir-driven wines.

Altocedro means “tall cedar,” and represents both wine-maker and owner Karim Mussi Saffie’s Lebanese-Argentine heritage, and a cedar tree which towers over the winery.

10% bleed-off, four pump-overs per day; three total delestages; no filtering; natural cold stabilization.

Whole berry fermentation with indigenous yeasts at low temperatures in small concrete tanks.
