95 pts James Suckling Aug 2017
This is really a phenomenal South African wine for the money showing such delicacy yet also power. The nose boasts plenty of iodine, crushed stones, balsam, violets and hints of sweet herbs. The palate’s full and exuberant with mouth-coating tannins and a long finish. 64% shiraz, 29% cabernet and 7% petit verdot.
4 ½ Stars 2019 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Brooding, powerful & measured, 15 (94 pts) shiraz-cab (with dash petit verdot) shows pedigree. Intricate detail in spicy fruit core follows to gracious peacock-tail finish. Noble & assured, with weight & fragrance in perfect balance. Even better than fine 14.

The 2015 Anwilka is a blend of 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 64% Shiraz and 7% Petit Verdot fermented in tronconic tanks and matured in 50% new French oak for 14 months. It has a very refined bouquet of pure black currant and bilberry fruit, less powerful yet more composed than some of the earlier vintages of Anwilka. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, well-judged acidity and notes of blackberry, pain grillé, white pepper and clove. It lingers nicely, gently fanning out on the finish to complete what is a very classy Anwilka to enjoy over the next decade.
Based at the south end of Stellenbosch with views of False Bay, the 40 hectare red wine property is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot. Proximity to the sea provides a specific microclimate that, together with the old ferricrete soils, are perfect for producing rich and focused wines. Under the guidance of internationally well-known Bordeaux wine personalities Hubert de Boüard (co-owner of Château Angélus in Saint-Emilion) and Bruno Prats (former owner of Château Cos d’Estournel in Saint-Estèphe), Anwilka has established a worldwide reputation for this red blend which has been described by Robert Parker as “the finest red wine I have ever had from South Africa”
Bright and inky in appearance. Fresh and vibrant with aromas of blackberries and violet on the nose. Full bodied with a bold and elegant tannin structure, the palate is balanced and complex with a long textured finish. A blend of 64% Syrah 29% Cabernet Sauvignon & 7% Petit Verdot.
