Awatere River Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Tasting Notes

The warmer months are just around the corner and for many, not soon enough. Now’s a great time to think about white wine, in particular a Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc, which has all kinds of applications, be it on its own or for the lighter fare of food options of the season, it’s hard to go wrong.

Having recently tried the 2022 Awatere River Sauvignon Blanc from Louis Vavasour, it really left an impression on us. If you’re a fan of the classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc style with its smorgasbord of herbs and tropical fruit and racy acidity then you are going to love it. Sustainably produced and vegan friendly, the 2022 Awatere River Sauvignon Blanc  has lifted aromatics that jump out of the glass leading into a palate that is juicy, with good fruit weight showcasing beautiful fruit purity ending with a saline, mineral note to the herbal nuanced fruit, finishing long and dry. As we worked it for several days it just seemed to get better, which is a strong indication of why it was so highly reviewed. If you are a  lover of  Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc then this is definitely a sure bet to impress and will keep you coming back for a second glass. Distinctive herbaceous aromatics and fresh acidity, the palate shows stone fruit, passionfruit, and citrus with a hint of minerality.

Alluring fresh gooseberry, peach and citrus peel with a sumptuous wet stone minerality; pure and composed with a zingy acidity and a long saline finish.

5 Stars Michael Cooper
The very punchy 2022 vintage (5*) was grown at three sites in the Awatere Valley. Pale lemon/green, it is Invitingly aromatic, racy and intense, in a strongly varietal style with tropical fruit and herbaceous flavours, finely poised and lingering.

91 pts James Suckling Nov 2022
Green apples, fennel, gooseberries and Sicilian lemons. Medium-bodied, bright and crisp with a refreshing citrus character to close. Sustainable. Vegan.

Winemaker Notes

The valley surrounding the Awatere River was carved out by ancient glaciers leaving rich alluvial deposits that give the wines a minerality and flintiness. Coupled with the crisp, pure water flowing down the Awatere (‘swift river’ in Maori) from Mount Tapuae-o-uenuku give the wines a unique expression of the land. Dating back over 100 years the Vavasour family has toiled upon this land and in the 1980’s saw the first vineyards planted. Taking what they have learned over the years of toiling the land, and experiences in winemaking across the world; the winemaking team has created a balance of old-world tradition with new world discipline and learned intuition when creating the wines. 100% sustainably produced and vegan friendly, Awatere wines are in transition of organic certification.

The grapes are picked when fully mature. Rapid processing with cool temperatures and minimal oxygen contact keeping the wine fresh and vibrant. Cool fermentation with a selected slow yeast strain before natural fermentation with native yeast on the lees for 3 months before bottling. Aging: Matures on lees for 3 months in stainless steel tanks.

We believe the less handling the better, and we like to allow the wine to develop with little or no finings – an opportunity that is only presented when the wine itself is of a very high standard. We believe you can see and taste the expression of this philosophy in every glass of Awatere River wine.
