Constantia Glen Five Magnum 2017

Tasting Notes

Due to the vagaries of the wine trade and the supply chain issues that have befallen us the past couple of years we saw none of 2017 Constantia Glen’s Five in the regular 750 ml format. We went straight through from the 2016 to 2018 vintage. But to our delight and surprise the winery had a small allotment of the 2017 Five in the larger 1.5 ml/magnum format. A 5-way Bordeaux red blend with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot leading the way, this was music to our ears this is a rare find and something that will age magnificently making it an exceptional deal and something to cherish.

97 pts Platinum  2021 Decanter World Wine Awards

Intense cassis, graphite, eucalypt, and violets on the nose. A plush palate of fine-grained tannins with black plum, black cherry, and blackcurrant leaf character. Love the weightless concentration and supreme elegance. This is top drawer.

5 Stars 2022 Platter’s South African Wine Guide

Weightless elegance in classic 5-way Bordeaux red, majority cab & merlot (32/24) in 17 ***** (96 pts). Superb balance & concentration, with velvet texture, focus & great length of cassis & plum flavour, embellished with graphite, dried herbs & scrub. Improves on already exceptional 16 (93 pts). 75% new oak, 18 months.

94 pts James Suckling Top 100 South African Wines 2022 #25

Blackberries, blueberries, dried violets, slate, dried spices, cocoa and charred bark on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Layered, balanced and supple with a delicious finish. Excellent length. Blend of 32% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 17% cabernet franc, 17% petit verdot and 10% malbec. Drink now or hold.

93 pts Tim Atkin MW 2021

Evolving nicely in bottle, this is a stylish, textured quintet of Cabernet Sauvignon with 68% Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The 75% new wood is very well handled, framing smooth tannins, cassis, cut grass and red berry fruit and cool climate acidity.  2023-30

Winemaker Notes

2017 was really a fantastic vintage for the red varieties at Constantia Glen and the wines from this vintage have garnered the same respect as those made in 2015. The flavour of the grapes at the time of picking was concentrated and intense with bright aromatics.

A carefully crafted blend of 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 17% Petit Verdot and 10% Malbec, matured for 18 months in 75% new and 25% second-fill French oak (225L) barrels. Following barrel maturation, the wine only received a very light filtration before making its way into bottle on 5 December 2018. With no fining agents used during the production of this wine, a harmless sediment may occur during maturation in the bottle. This is truly a stunning vintage of the Constantia Glen FIVE, which we hope will continue to age and
develop beautifully in bottle, and it should easily do so for 12 to 15 years under ideal cellaring conditions.

COLOUR
Youthful in colour with a very dark magenta core unwinding into a bright and lively garnet rim.
NOSE
Bright aromas of ripe blackcurrant, juicy plums and fragrant dried herbs. This first impression is
underpinned by a multitude of savoury notes that demand further exploration. Graphite, cedar
and floral aromas start emerging from the glass, and finally once the whirling liquid comes to
rest; the bouquet concludes with hints of violet, cassis and wild fynbos florae.
PALATE
The palate has a dramatic entry as one consumes the concentrated dark fruit flavours that were
evident on the nose, but the mid-palate displays fantastic balance between refinement and
power. The textbook ripening conditions of the vintage combined with meticulous attention to
extraction- and maturation methods in the cellar, have led to a compellingly structured wine
with excellent freshness and depth. The delicious, fine-grain tannins provide a structured
backbone and incredible mouth-coating texture. The wine comes across as tightly wound in its
youth with enormous ageing potential. The ever-present Constantia freshness provides for a
long, lingering finish that will have you beckoning for another sip.
