Delaire Graff ‘Botmaskop’ 2017

Tasting Notes

3/28/20
This has become one of our favorite Bordeaux blends coming out of South Africa over the past six plus vintages we have been fortunate enough to have tried. The 2017 Botmaskop speaks of the exceptional vintage and this Cabernet led blend (65%) is a beauty. Over delivering is the key here. The nose is all about deep dark fruits of blackberry, mulberry and cassis nuanced with some laid in oak spice, vanilla and nicely integrated herbal notes aromatically. This is plush, fuller bodied and layered with a mouth filling creamy texture and beautiful finely textured, ripe tannins enveloping the deep dark fruit flavors. This has exceptional length on the back end with a savory note pushing up through the sweet berry fruit notes on the finish that adds intrigue. Playing the sweet dark fruit and savory combo to perfection this is showing well out the gate but has the structural make up to drink superbly over the next 4-5 years.

Awards/Reviews

4 ½ Stars 2020 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
65% cab in 5-way Bordeaux-style blend, 17 (94 pts) as always big, forward & rather showy, with lots of dark fruit & savoury character, 45% new oak. Succulent & enjoyable in youth, but structure & depth to go a good few years, especially in magnum.

Winemaker Notes

A blend of:65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 11% Petit Verdot, 8% Merlot, 3% Malbec
Powerful, yet elegant and polished. A red blend with classic aromas of dark berry fruit, spice and cassis. The softness of tannins and balance in structure complete this wine on the palate. Optimal ageing potential of 5 – 8 years.
