Let’s take a look at the three historic wines from Clos Quebrada de Macul. The first, which opens the portfolio, is Alba, a selection that draws on the house’s vineyards and is not only the gateway to this historic terroir, but also a showcase of style. While Stella, the second wine, is full-bodied with a firm tannin structure—monolithic if you like—Alba is much more docile, with a sculpted and rounded texture. Both are very good examples of Andean reds from Maipo Alto, but in almost opposite keys. Domus, the house’s top wine, is more on the Alba side in the sense of its texture. There is elegance in this red (97% cabernet sauvignon from 1970s-era vines from, and the rest is petit verdot from younger vines), the sense of place is conveyed through the spicy and herbal aromas, some menthol, lots of black fruits, slight earthy touches. The palate is full of flavors, and those enveloping polished tannins. This is one of the great Domuses we have tasted.

Along with the 2022 vintage, the 2021 Domus Aurea performed even better than during my initial tasting, which was made especially clear in the context of the entire vertical. It is a spectacular example of Alto Maipo, beautifully capturing the distinctive herbal quality endemic to this site with a pitch-perfect combination of resinous, herbal aromas that meld with black fruits, purple flowers, sweet tobacco, cedar and well-integrated, high-quality new oak. The palate is rich, concentrated and staining in its intensity yet remains lifted and refreshingly light on its feet. It concludes with supremely refined, persistent, measured tannic grip, perfumed lift and a focused, chalky undertone. This is an effortlessly beautiful reference point for the region that should develop without issue over the next two decades. 2026-2045

A very savory rendition, marked by up-front flavors of Nyon olive, singed orange peel and bay leaf that are tamed by a luscious core of cherry and raspberry preserves, folding nicely into the finish around firm but well-integrated tannins and notes of Mexican chocolate. Drink now through 2036. 1,200 cases made.

Winemaker Notes

Domus Aurea is the the result of skillful winemakers and the best possible natural conditions. Neither its texture nor its flavor, round and pleasant tannins, will ever be forgotten. So much, so that the happy drinkers of this piece of art do feel they know the secrets of the Maipo Valley.

Among the promises of Domus Aurea are its eucalyptus notes, the balance and freshness of its cherries and its delicate orange zest wrapped in subtle chocolate. Nevertheless, the fact that the whole process is oriented by the same respect for tradition and the terroir, makes every vintage a unique wine.

This wine is unfiltered to preserve the original flavor and integrity, which will be much appreciated if you guard it for a long time.
