4 ½ Stars 2023 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Power & assertive, as ever, with resolute dark-& red-fruit core of rhubarb & morello cherry on 20 (92 pts), robuster tannin structure than previous demands time. Yet not unrefined, evidenced by elegant fynbos & floral scents, sweetly aromatic spicing acquired during 15 months in barrique, 31% new.
Double Gold – 2022 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Award
After seven days of fermentation and 14 days of skin contact, the malolactic fermentation was completed in new French barrels. The wine then matured for 15 months in French barriques, of which 31% were new wood and the remainder second, third and fourth-covered wood.
Inky purple black colour like liquid velvet. The nose bold and forthcoming with mocha choc vanilla notes and ripe plump cherries, sweet black pastels, wild berries, eucalypt, baked Christmas pudding, and a savoury licorice edge. This wine is not a first date, it is an interesting revisit on every sip. Subtle tannins, seductive acidity, fruit intensity. Big bold and not shy. From first whiffs / nose to rich palate, this wine is a statement of opulence. The proverbial ‘Iron fist in a velvet glove”
