Eenzaamheid Chenin Blanc 2020

Tasting Notes

Eenzaamheid has come out of nowhere to become one of the Cape’s up and coming wine estates. Located in the Agter-Paarl region, before 7th generation winemaker Janno Briers-Louw produced his first bottling under the Eenzaamheid label in 2010, Eenzaamheid had sold all its grapes from its 400 hectares of vineyards to other well-known wineries in the area. Realizing the quality of the fruit coming from these dry farmed vineyards, many of old-vine material, Janno began producing small batches of superior quality wines, choosing the best lots for his own label. The results have been impressive, in particular with its Chenin Blanc, which has now positioned itself as one of the Cape’s finest, which is no small feat as there is plenty of stiff competition in the category.

The 2020 Eenzaamheid Chenin Blanc was awarded a prestigious 5 Star award in the 2023 Platter’s Guide, where they stated, “Pure joy for now and for years”. Sourced from low-yielding dry farmed bush vines that were 36 years old at the time of the vintage this is a great take on what South Africa does best, showcasing the prowess of Cape Chenin Blanc. Offering engaging vibrancy and freshness that is countered by lovely mid-palate richness ending long and lingering, this is beautifully balanced, the wine’s crispness counters the wine’s richness perfectly. Just now starting to show its true potential this has a number of years of great drinking in front of it. We are offering this impressive, over delivering old vine Chenin Blanc for $24.99. Only 4,000 bottles were produced so this is truly a boutique offering.

5 Stars 2023 Platter’s South African Wine Guide

Producer’s signature wine, from low-yield dryland bushvine, 36 years old. Elegant opulence in 20 ***** (95 pts), honeydew melon & ripe Golden Delicious apple in a perfectly crafted oak frame, 10% new, 11 months. Lees stirring brings extra complexity, tempered by freshness from eschewed malo. Bunch pressed & barrel fermented. Pure joy now & for years.

Winemaker Notes

The grapes were hand-picked from a 36-year-old, low-yielding parcel of bush vines, and chilled prior to whole-bunch pressing. The juice was barrel fermented at temperatures ranging from 12-150C, with no malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged sur lie in 300L & 400L French oak barrels, with regular stirring of the lees for extra complexity and a rounder mouthfeel.

The 2020 is stylistically very similar to our previous vintages and has the same attractive aromas of bruised yellow apples, hay and a touch of
beeswax. The palate displays a lovely richness and a fleshy mid-palate texture as derived from the sur lie ageing process, while the fruit flavours are perfectly balanced by the wine’s crisp acidity. The oak component never overpowers the wine’s inherent varietal notes but adds subtle interest in the background. Lengthy flavours of baked apple pie and winter melon linger on the finish. Our Chenin Blanc is known for its exceptional ageing potential and will reward careful cellaring for up to 10 years from vintage.
