September 2020
The 2018 Eikendal Charsima is blend dominated by Shiraz, 78%, Petit Verdot, 17% and 5% Sangiovese, from the 2019 vintage, filling in the blend and adding extra freshenss. This has a lovely nose, lightly spicy and floral with black fruit at its core. The palate is medium fuller to fuller bodied, supple and backed with ripe, round tannins giving this an engaging textural mouth feel and just the right tension on the dry finish. This is just now opening up and should drink nicely over the next 3 plus years.
This wine is a blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. Rhône meets Spain meets Italy!

Shiraz-led, perfumed 18 (94 pts) charismatic indeed with 17% petit verdot amplifying violet, black fruit & chai spice intensity, harmonious after year old wood, then 5% 2019 sangiovese added for freshness. Has good weight at moderate 13.5% alcohol.

There are few more consistent red blends intended for everyday drinking than Charisma from Eikendal, Always a blend of Shiraz and Petit Verdot with Sangiovese from the succeeding vintage, the wine employs no established template but works well. The 2018, therefore, consists of 78% Syrah, 17% Petit Verdot plus 5% Sangiovese from the 2019 vintage. The nose shows red and black fruit, violets, incense and herbs while the palate is rich yet not short of freshness. What might otherwise be a fairly straightforward Shiraz gets extra interest thanks to the addition of the Petit Verdot and Sangiovese.
The Charisma 2018 is an ingenious creation and red blend living up to its name. The Shiraz (Rhône Valley) lends a tight, fresh structure with aromatic and seasoned undertones. Petit Verdot (Bordeaux) contributes a rich berry character and the Sangiovese, in true Italian style, adds fruity flavours with flair on the palate. The result is a bold, charming, seductive and ultimately elegant wine.
