93 pts Tim Atkin MW 2020
Eikendal switched to larger 500-litre oak barrels for the ageing of its Merlot from the 2017 vintage, greatly to the benefit of the wine. Sourced from a single, early-picked block, this is fresh, perfumed and focused, with fine tannins, subtle wood spice and a core of black cherry fruit. 2021-26.

Fruitcake & a little chocolate on 18 (89 pts) lead to a soft-textured palate, where the fruit charm is kept serious by firm tannins & succulent acidity. Similar ripeness & fruit sweetness to Cab of same vintage.
The Eikendal Merlot 2018 has an attractive nose that reminds one of forest floor, violets, plums, black berries, cherries and peppery spices. On the palate the wine and full and rounded, with soft tannins and a rich taste of black berries and plums. The elegant finish is long and pleasant.
