Glenelly Estate Reserve Red 2014

Tasting Notes

We recently had a big run on the 2017 Glenelly Lady May, and as good as that wine is we have a great follow up from this esteemed estate, the 2014 Glenelly Estate Reserve Red, which we call a “baby-Lady May”. A Bordeaux blend with some Syrah in the mix, don’t be fooled by its age as this has a number of years of great drinking  in front of it. One of the more important things to remember about Glenelly is that they hold their wines back  a number of years before release, a luxury many wine producers cannot afford.

The 2014 is a mesmerizing wine that still has youthful qualities that beguiles its age. The fruit is still vibrant while the tannins are still in the mix but the mid palate is supple and loaded with black fruit, the finish long and seamless. For all those who are familiar with the Estate’s flagship wine, the Lady May, this is the baby, with all the positive attributes and without the cost. There’s a reason why Stellenbosch has such a reputation with Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends; they are some of the finest in the world with pricing that makes them hard to match. This is a superlative red wine with some noteworthy third party critical reviews to highlight its impeccable quality,  not bad for something that has already been aged for you. This is one of the better buys we have tried so far this year, seamless is a great way to describe this and the best part is that it’s got a number of years of great drinking in front of it. Pretty hard not to like this, the pricing is just icing on the cake.

Glenelly Estate Reserve 2014

5 Stars 2020 Platter’s South African Wine Guide

Cab-led (40%) 5-way fusion of Bordeaux varieties with shiraz. 14 ***** (95 pts) reprises ripeness & power (14.5% alcohol) of 13 (94 pts), yet great detailing & precision; generous blueberry, dark plum & blackcurrant, with toasty spice (30% new oak) & savouriness on smooth, polished finish.

93 ps Tim Atkin MW 2019

The Estate Reserve comes mostly from the cooler, east facing slope at Glenelly and is a cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon with 50% Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Fine, elegant and nuanced with cassis, red berry and graphite notes and granular tannins.

92 pts Vinous Oct 2019

The 2014 Estate Reserve was sorted by hand, lightly crushed, fermented in stainless steel and matured in 300-liter French oak barrels. The outgoing, lively nose features plenty of red berry fruit mixed with mint and crushed violet. The palate is well balanced with fine-grained tannins; the mainly red fruit is pure and nicely integrated with the oak. It gradually builds in the mouth toward a saline finish and a slightly fishy aftertaste. This needs two or three years in bottle, but it should turn into a very fine Estate Reserve. 2023-2040

Winemaker Notes

Glenelly Estate Reserve is the signature red blend of the estate and is based on the classic claret blend from the 1700’s. The 2014 vintage is all about the combination of power and elegance. Rich powerful aromatics of fresh blackberries and blackcurrant initially present themselves with spicy plum and cedar continuing to lead you into the wine. The palate entry is bold and rich with fine tannin supported by the ripe fresh fruit and hints of spice. Very good oak integration with a fresh long finish.
