Holm Oak Pinot Noir 2019

Tasting Notes

Tasmania has the ideal micro-climate for producing some pretty compelling  cool climate varietals. Pinot Noir seems to have found a perfect fit in this cool climate Island state, the only problem is we don’t see much from there as most producers are fairly small in scale and the wines either get absorbed in more local markets or just don’t find the right importer to give what is available the necessary attention to make things work.

Holm Oak is a small boutique producer in the northern part of Tasmania, in the Tamar River Valley, that has done justice with Pinot Noir over the few years we have been exposed to the label. The 2019 Estate Pinot Noir is sourced from estate vines and encapsulates all the elegance that the varietal has to offer. A light translucent red color gives way to a nose that showcases pretty red fruits of cherry and strawberry accentuated with a light floral component along with some spice and underbrush adding nuance. Medium bodied, there’s a lovely silky textural quality to the palate where the lightly spiced red flavors have nice lift and brightness, while the finer tuned tannins and carrying acidity bring this to a nice conclusion. With some aeration this opens up beautifully showcasing the elegance and refinement that are the hallmarks of well made Pinot Noir. Drinking spot on as we speak this should drink beautifully for another 2-3 more years quite easily.

From estate vines, various blocks and several clones. Wild fermented; no whole bunches; matured 10 months in 25% new French oak barrels. Pinot noir is the game for Bec and Tim Duffy, and their estate wine projects the personality of their vineyard, tucked into the folds of the Tamar River. Spicy red cherry and strawberry fruit is nuanced with a hint of sage, by bright acidity and fine-ground tannins.

Winemaker Notes

Our grape growing philosophy is to produce the cleanest product with the softest management practices available. This involves using some organic and modern soft chemistry. We are in the process of adopting some organic measures on a larger scale

Several clones of Pinot Noir from many blocks on our Estate vineyard were picked over a two-week period. All batches were destemmed and were wild fermented in small open top fermenters. Ferments were hand plunged up to 4 times a day and then pressed to oak upon dryness. The wine underwent MLF in barrel and was then racked back to barrel for further maturation. 25% new French oak was used (the remainder 1 – 4 year old barrels) and the wine was matured in these barrels for 10 months.

2019 was a fantastic year at Holm Oak. Dry mild conditions, moderate yields and some new winery equipment made for the least stressful vintage on record! This resulted in well balanced Pinot with lovely aromatics, bright fruit and fine tannin structure. Our 2019 Pinot has some beautiful spice, strawberry and cherry characters on the nose. The palate has fantastic fruit intensity, vibrant acidity and fine silky tannins.
