Jim Barry Watervale Riesling 2023

Tasting Notes

Explosive florals, fresh lime, and citrus combine with a hint of rockmelon and wet limestone on the nose. The entry is driven by the nose, with a heap of fruit weight. Chalky in texture with white floral, citrus flavours, and a juicy finish.

The 2023 Watervale Riesling is supple and spicy and very fine, with an aspirin-like acid line that underpins the fleshy citrus fruit. The wine is utterly pristine in its construction and populated by fruit that is crystal clear and perfectly eloquent of its Clare Valley roots. 12% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. 2024-2038

Varietal, youthful, floral and youthful with scents of white flowers and lemon, fresh green apple and pear, there’s a layer of lees adding breadth and complexity across the bouquet. Crisp and dry, flavours mirror the bouquet, no mistaking the acid line with a saline quality and framing the white fleshed fruits and citrus nicely. Well made and ready to drink from day of purchase through 2030.

Delicate but highly crowd-pleasing aromas of orange and lime sorbet, nectarine and florals wafts from the glass. It’s a light, dry, crisp wine that offers a punchy freshness and fruity appeal but could gain honeyed complexity with a few more years in bottle.

Winemaker Notes

Wine has been flowing in the Clare Valley since 1851 and is an integral part of the culture. A small area, accounting for less than 1.5% of Australia’s total wine production, it is one of Australia’s most prestigious premium wine regions, most famous for its Riesling and Shiraz. With its beautiful rolling hills, ideal winter rainfall, and Mediterranean climate, the Clare Valley carries a unique history and winemaking heritage.

The tiny village of Watervale (population of 246), nestled in South Australia’s Clare Valley, is renowned for the quality of its Riesling. Our Watervale Riesling is picked from a special part of the Florita vineyard in Watervale. This famous Riesling vineyard usually achieves full ripeness with high natural acid levels.

Located fifteen kilometres south of Clare township, the tiny village of Watervale is nestled in South Australia’s Clare Valley and is internationally renowned for the quality of its Rieslings.

A consistently awarded wine since its first release in 1974, our Watervale Riesling is picked from select parcels of vines that achieve ripeness with naturally high acid levels.
