90 pts Wine Advocate Dec 2023
Opening with classic Pinot Noir aromas of ripe red cherries and hints of turned earth and potting soil, the 2021 Pinot Noir displays notes of dusty raspberry blossoms with succulent potpourri essence. Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the palate is fresh, clean and layered with complexity, offering a balanced structure with juicy acidity before gliding into a fresh, clean finish. Almost 40,000 bottles that rested for a year in French oak, 10% new, were produced. It’s a delightful wine that is punching above its weight class. 2022-2031
The warmer days combined with cooler nights resulted in a healthy crop with excellent fruit quality, aromatic intensity and fresh natural acidity.
From three distinct cool-climate vineyards in the Western Cape. The Overberg vineyards bring a classic and elegant strawberry fruit profile, while the vineyards in Elgin add structure and depth. The Durbanville vineyards give the final wine an alluring perfume.
The grapes were hand-picked into small lug boxes for transport to the winery. Half of the grapes were put into open-top fermenters and given hand punch-downs and the other half in closed tanks done with regular pump-overs. About 20% of the wine was whole-bunch fermented. After primary fermentation, the wine was basket-pressed and racked for malolactic fermentation and subsequent barrel maturation. Only French oak was used, primarily neutral oak, but with about 10% new oak.
An elegant, lightly-wooded style of Pinot Noir showing classic strawberry and red cherry notes coupled with a hint of spice. A firm, yet silky-smooth tannin-structure supports the lovely bright fruit characteristics of the wine.
