Kurtz Shiraz 2015

Tasting Notes

VEGAN FRIENDLY!

A 5th generation Barossan of German decent, Steve Kurtz has an abundance of old vine material to work with from this Barossa Valley vineyards. The Kurtz Family Shiraz is sourced from fruit from vineyards that can trace their origins to the 1930’s (planted by his grandfather), supplemented with younger vines planted in the 1950’s and 1960’s (planted by his father). The perception of what most people’s take of the Barossa style seems to be changing and this is a great reflection of that. More energy and lift is apparent with lower pH (higher acidity) giving this drive and a more pure fruit definition than many wines we tried in the past.

Here the concentration is still there but not the heft, the fruit is bright and lifted and highlighting acidity really gives this freshness and vibrancy, both on the nose and in the palate. The nose is a lovely mixture of sweet berry fruit, blackberry and blueberry, nuanced with notions of pepper and licorice. The palate is medium fuller bodied, while the fruit, darker in nature, is quite vibrant with a spine of lengthening acidity keeping freshness to the fore while the tannin base is finely tuned. This has good fruit intensity and depth with the juicy fruit flavors carried to a long, savory, dry finish.

Inky ruby. Lively, spice-tinged aromas of cherry and dark berries, joined by slowly emerging woodsmoke and floral nuances. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering intense blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that fan out slowly on the back half. Fine-grained tannins shape the very long, spicy finish, which shows very good clarity and lift. — Josh Raynolds

Winemaker Notes

Our family vineyards are planted with Old Shiraz vines. This is a reflection of the beauty of Barossa Valley.

Bright ruby. Sexy blackberry and cherry-cola on the nose, with suave mineral and floral notes adding interest. Juicy and pure, with vivid dark berry flavors, slow-mounting spiciness and no obvious tannins. A seamless Shiraz with impressive finishing sweetness and length. I’d drink this now for its lovely fruit. 800 cases produced.
