Leopard’s Leap ‘Culinaria Collection’ Grand Vin 2017

Tasting Notes

February 2020

A blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 12% Malbec and 6% Petit Verdot, respectively, with grapes sourced mainly from both Stellenbosch and Darling and few other varietals being sourced from outlying areas, allowing it to be labeled a Wine of Origin Western Cape. This has lovely fruit purity with dark cherry and dark currant with a hint of oak spice and chocolate aromatically. The palate is medium to medium fuller bodied with a lively stream of acidity giving this vibrancy to the darker red fruit flavors while the tannins are riper and finer grained which helps lead to an elegant but firm structure. This has a good 4-5 more years of drinking pleasure in front of it.

Awards/Reviews

4 ½ Stars 2020 Platter’s South African Wine Guide

17 (90 pts) improves on 16 in cohesion of rich fruitcake & spicy cedar flavours. Oak, 40% new French, dialed down in better vintage. Appealing dry yet rich & textured. As before cab-led 4-way Bordeaux red from Darling & Stellenbosch fruit.

Winemaker Notes

Cabernet Sauvignon (46%), Merlot (36%), Malbec (12%) and Petit Verdot (6%).
Grand Vin is a Bordeaux-style blend with complex layers. Aromas of vibrant red fruit, black currant and blueberry, perfectly integrated with subtle oak spices and a hint of dark chocolate in the after-taste. The ripe tannins ensure a firm, elegant structure
