Bold as the first star to shine each night – this Cape Red Blend aims to show the diversity in styles and appellations within the world of South African wine.
THE CAUSE SUPPORTED BY THIS WINE – African Pangolin:
R300,00 (roughly $20) from every case goes to the African Pangolin Working Group. Also known as ‘scaly anteaters’, Pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world due to the demand for their scales and meat primarily from the Asian market. Due to this, Pangolin poaching has made the species greatly endangered and without action, the Pangolin will be extinct in the near future.
$29.99
Composition – Pinotage, Cinsaut, and Syrah 62%, 30%, 8% respectively
Appellation – Pinotage – Franschhoek; Cinsaut – Paarl; Syrah – Cape Agulhas
Terroir – Pinotage – 20 year old vines planted in Granite soils high on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain overlooking Stellenbosch. Cinsaut – 35+ year old bush vines high up on the mountain just below the Afrikaans monument overlooking Paarl. These gnarled vines are planted in dry, dusty shale soils and seem to thrive in difficult conditions. Syrah – 21 year old vines planted in iron-rich Koffieklip soil on the northwest slope overlooking the large Lomond dam.
Wood – 11 months on medium toast French oak
Production – 700 bottles
Pinotage, Syrah, and Cinsaut from three vastly different appellations of the Western Cape come together in this Cape Red Blend to make our biggest and boldest red. Crafted in a Beaujolais style, 70% of all the grapes used in this wine underwent 14 days of carbonic maceration. The result is the elegant characteristics of each cultivar shining through. The Pinotage provides a very pronounced body composed of dark fruits including black cherry and plumb. The Cinsaut lightens the wine and adds a soft vanilla characteristic. While the Syrah ever so carefully adds some pepper and subtle notes of clove and cinnamon. The result is a vibrant yet robust Cape Red Blend with magnificent aging potential.
