Jan 2019 – The 2017 SMG, a blend of 70% Shiraz, 15% Mourvedre and 15% Grenache is their first release of this wine which previously was a SMV (Shiraz, Mourvedre and Viognier) blend. Keeping in form with the house style for its red wines this is fruit driven, backed with smooth, elegant tannins. The nose has notions of assorted red fruits, strawberry, cherry and plum with a light rustic earth tone touched up with some oak spice aromatically. Medium fuller bodied this has a core of lightly spiced red fruit, cherry and plum, with powdery tannins that leads to a dry, but warm finish. A bit of the rustic edge that the Mourvedre brings to the blend pushes up through on the back end, adding another element of nuance to the final package. This is showing well now and should drink beautifully over the next 2-3 years.
