5 Stars 2023 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Same winemaking to showcase terroir & chenin’s expression: bunch pressed, fermented naturally/11 months in older barrique, unfiltered. 21 (96 pts) from old Paardeberg vines shows lemon blossom, lemongrass, fynbos, & crunchy apple coiled around a core of fresh, balanced acid. Finely textured, with lingering ruby grapefruit nibble on the finish. Will age gracefully.
95 pts Tim Atkin MW 2022
The Eikelaan vineyard on the Paardeberg supplies the fruit for this structured, chiselled, layered Swartland Chenin Blanc. Pear, green apple and citrus fruit flavours are complemented by nuanced old oak, stony intensity, a hint of oatmeal and a tight, focused, mouth-watering finish. A white that ages beautifully too. 2023-29
95 pts James Suckling Dec 2022
Inviting aromas of grapefruit, flint, peach fuzz, wet stone and dried herbs. Medium-bodied with tight structure. Linear and driven with lovely mineral and fresh character. Crystalline. Complex and persistent. Already a pleasure but this will really show its potential with time. Sustainable. Drink or hold.
92 pts Wine Advocate Dec 2022
Fresh, clean and still showing its baby fat, the 2021 Granite Chenin Blanc is aromatic in the glass while offering notions of dusty white cherry blossom, lemon peel and just-ripe peach. Medium-bodied, the wine has plenty of life left in it and will go the distance, so be patient. Delightfully fresh and picturesque, the wine unpacks its complexities across the long-lingering and fresh finish. Give it a try! 2023-2036
Grapes for our GRANITE Chenin were sourced from a 45 year old sustainably and dry farmed bush vine vineyard named Eikelaan, planted in the decomposed GRANITE soils of the Paardeberg. This is our highest altitude GRANITE soil vineyard and with the very deep decomposed GRANITE soils tends to produce wines with great acidity and a flinty, stony aromatic profile.
The GRANITE Chenin tends to exhibit a fantastic natural acidity that balances out the texture and mid-palate that all Swartland white wines possess. The nose is flinty with some stone fruit, floral and citrus aromatics. Ageing potential 10-20 years.
