95 pts Wine Advocate Dec 2022

Beginning with a floral grip, the 2019 Iron Syrah offers a seductive nose filled with red flowers, wild raspberry and dusty cherry as elegant spice tones waft from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the wine has a fine mineral tension and firm, rocky tannins that lift the mid-palate. As the tannins loosen, the wine uncoils in the mouth, leading to a food-friendly and delightfully fragranced finish. This was made with 100% whole-cluster Syrah, and the wine rested for one year in 50% new French oak. It’s delicious! 3,300 bottles produced. 2022-2038

95 pts Wine Spectator 5/31/23

A beautiful, elegant red, with milled white pepper and fresh rosemary notes, which are abundantly fragrant on the nose but more subdued on the palate, plus pure accents of ripe black raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, orange peel and dark chocolate. Reveals fine, silky tannins, which emerge to firm the mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2033. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 109 cases made, 5 cases imported.

4 ½ Stars 2022 Platter’s South African Wine Guide

Dryland Malmesbury block on deep koffieklip (ferricrete) site. As expected, 19 (93 pts) quietest of the red trio, yet with the most tightly packed, almost linear focus. Cassis & blackberries, pot-pourri, fine tannins very present but balanced.

Winemaker Notes

The IRON Syrah vineyard, on the rolling hills outside of Malmesbury, has always been very important in creating a Syrah with incredible mid-palate, deep fragrance and round tannins, due to the ancient, rich, gravelly Koffieklip soils they are grown on.  The dry land bush vines on this exposed site are the earliest ripening of all of our Syrahs and gives us insight to the quality of the vintage ahead.

Brimming with flavours of wild blueberry and dark plum that lead, into hints of tomato leaf, aromatic allspice and a floral complexity.  The full-bodied meatiness of this wine, has a freshness and long finish that intertwines with its fine grain tannins.  The IRON Syrah with its natural extract, deep perfume and round mid-palate, is always the most open and attractive of the three single soil Syrahs in its youth.  Can be aged 10-20 years.
