5 Stars 2022 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
From home-farm vines, soils deeper, denser, little water holding capacity, vines & bunches smaller. Thrilling dryness, as on all of these. Effortless & pure 19 (95 pts) fynbos & lily florality, generous dark fruits & dense, finely woven tannins. Fruiter than red siblings.
95 pts James Suckling Jan 2022
Blueberry, wild plum, peppercorn, oyster shell, tile and five spice on the nose. Slate, too. Medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannins that turn fine. Peppery and spicy with bitter bark and tar notes. Tight. Unfiltered. One of our favorite wines from South Africa. Better after 2023.
94+ Wine Advocate Dec 2022
The 2019 Schist Syrah is floral and juicy with fantastic depth and finesse. Aromas of red plum and dusty raspberry sway with polish and purity before revealing seductive floral tones of rose and lavender in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is instantly impressive on the palate with supple tannins; it is both broad-shouldered and balanced and glides to a seductively long finish. Only 2,700 bottles were filled after the wine rested for a year in 50% new French oak. 2022-2039

Minerally on the nose, this vibrant red features a core of crushed raspberry and black plum fruit, wrapped in an aromatic thread of rose hip, sandalwood, dried thyme and graphite. Shows lightly chalky, well-meshed tannins, which provide fine definition and emerge to firm the finish. Elegant. Drink now through 2033. 223 cases made, 15 cases imported.
The SCHIST Syrah is grown on our Roundstone Estate in the Swartland, home of Mullineux. Planted in 2000, we have been working intimately with this vineyard since 2005 and it is the reason that we purchased the property. The structured SCHIST soils make for structured, broader tannins and create the darkest perfume of all our single soil Syrahs, with phenomenal aging potential.
This is the most structured Syrah in our Single Terroir range. On the nose there are notes of black pepper, black fruit and spices. The palate is full-bodied with a meaty, savoury character, plenty silky tannins giving structure and a balancing natural acidity. The finish is fresh, long and supple.
