4 ½ Stars 2022 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Blend of 3 soil types featured in Terroir range, half the barrel time (12 months). Smooth & supple 19 (93 pts) has all the perfume, length, texture & tannin that defines Swartland syrah, plus a white pepper spiciness & slight green walnut grip.
92 pts James Suckling Dec 2022
Aromas of grilled plums, grilled meat, coriander and clove. Medium- to full-bodied with silky tannins. Succulent and deep with steady intensity. Chocolate and blueberry come through. Lovely.
One of the best vintages of Mullineux Syrah to date. Since the great drought in the Western Cape which started in 2014, the vines had beautifully adapted, resulting in wines with superb complexity and an incredibly balanced intensity. This Swartland Syrah has a classic perfume of wild-growing white Watsonia Lilies, fresh mulberries and black olive pips. The structured palate follows through with intricate layers of kumquats, dark plums, sour cherry and star anise and finishes with powerful and velvety tannins. Best served at 16 to 18 °C and whilst the wine will benefit greatly from ageing, it could also be enjoyed young if preferred, with decanting then recommended.
