Neil Ellis Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Tasting Notes

Neil Ellis has a track record of producing some of South Africa’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 2014 Stellenbosch Cabernet is true to form from this esteemed producer. This is one of the better $20 Cabernets you are going to try from just about anywhere. Enticing in the best way this is classically structured and beautifully balanced. The nose gives notions of cigar box and light oak spice underpinned with a core of cassis and black fruit aromatically. The palate has deep dark fruit flavors with good structure defined by the fine tannin base that plays off perfectly against the fruit. Layered and lingering, this has the depth and fruit weight that punches way above its modest price point. Kudos to the Neil Ellis team for such an over delivering wine.

Awards/Reviews

91 pts Tim Atkin MW 2016 This terrific Cab has a deep, dark garnet color and a bright ruby edge with aromas of black current, blackberry, plum and fresh herbs. Purity of fruit including cherry, plum, spicy peppery notes are supported by firm tannins. This wine is youthful with a long dry finish.
4 Stars 2018 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Classic cab cassis, cigarbox & fine leather in 14. Sweet fruited, underpinned by good tannin structure. More generous than austere but impressive 13.
