Penfolds has an extensive portfolio loaded up with a lot of high end wines. Several are icons and in a class that puts them in rarified air, ranking among some of the finest in the world, but unfortunately way out of bounds for most people to enjoy on a regular day to day basis. But there a lot of gems within the portfolio that are not only well priced and within the reach of many wine lovers who want quality but at user friendly pricing. We recently tried a number of Penfolds’ wines and one of the big surprises was not in the high end category, was this wine. This blend was first made in 1976 and in certain vintages it really over delivers and for savvy consumers has an almost icon like status for its quality and pricing.
Putting Shiraz and Cabernet together is a classic Aussie blend and Penfolds has had great success over the years. We couldn’t find much about the wine in terms of critical reviews, but trust us, the wine for the money represents over delivering value. We liked the wine so much that we reached out to our supplier to retry it and it proved that our first go with it was no fluke. This has a lightly spiced, beautiful nose of blueberry, dark plum and black berry that flows into a palate of juicy darker red fruit and black fruit flavors that show surprising depth and a round fleshy palate with good supporting structural tannins. You can drink it now but it will age beautifully in the short term as well. This is one to stock up on and at $11.99 a bottle will not disappoint. Always on the lookout for a great value, we have found one here. Sometimes the wine that surprises the most is not in the high end category.
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet is very much a reflection of the Penfolds winemaking style and philosophy. Sourced from premium vineyards across South Australia, the wine is known for its full-flavored style with excellent shiraz and cabernet fruit, firm yet well-rounded structure and balanced oak. Made as a traditional ‘Australian blend’, the shiraz component provides fleshy fruit flavor while cabernet provides a frame of fine grained tannins.
