2019 delivered the “smallest ever” crop of Soldaat, according to Eben Sadie, but the low yields didn’t result in an over-concentrated wine. Quite the contrary, in fact. This is a pure, almost transparent style of Grenache, with Pinot Noir-like aromas and flavours of pomegranate and red cherry, some white pepper and clove from 80% whole bunches and a grippy finish.
Vines were planted in the mid 1960’s at around 708m of altitude. The age of the vines, and the elevation, play crucial roles in the quality. Because of the higher altitude, the 2018 held up well compared to other sites.
