Natural wines have really made some serious headway the last couple of years. The quality appears to have an uptick across the board as well, although there are plenty of versions that are a bit too funky for many wine drinkers, displaying quite a few flaws that in all seriousness many traditional wine drinkers can’t wrap their heads around. When we were presented with the 2022 Santa Julia El Burro Malbec Natural we were quite skeptical at first but that quickly subsided once we tried the wine. Its color is worth the price of admission alone, making one realize why Malbec, or Cot, in its native Cahor region of France, was named the black grape of Cahor. Malbec has now found a welcoming home in Argentina and the quality has never been better.
Produced from organically grown grapes and made without any sulphites, the 2022 Santa Julia El Burro Malbec Natural has a deep dark light capturing purple color which leads into a palate that is fresh and vibrant but loaded up with flavor, reminding of dark cherries and dark berries that are juicy and energetic, finishing long and supported with some finer-grained tannins.. For a natural wine this was very clean and would make a perfect wine for the grilling season we are now into. Some nice reviews do it justice, this has more than enough going on to make it worthy of anyone’s table.

A fruity malbec with dark cherries, violets, hot stones and a hint of oyster sauce. Juicy and vivid on the palate with fresh, natural acidity and firm tannins. Flavorful finish. A well-made natural wine. From organically grown grapes. No sulphites added. Drink now.
Surprisingly enough, the 2022 El Burro Malbec Natural feels a bit closed, as Sebastian Zuccardi told me that when you work in a reductive way and don’t use added sulfur, the wines tend to close down. It has a somewhat reductive personality and needed air and time in the glass. This achieved 14.7% alcohol, which also acts as a kind of preservative. It’s varietal, with violets, berries and herbs, a juicy palate with fine-grained tannins and a long, dry finish. It’s clean and precise and has a lively color, as adding sulfur also lowers the color, which was not the case here.
Perfumed with violets and wild raspberries, this wine’s quick journey to the northern hemisphere left it with a slight tanky edge to the acidity. A bit of air settled it, becoming exuberant and energetic. Toss it on top of the ice in a picnic cooler to focus its energy.
This wine is an accurate reflection of our mission to craft sustainable wines in an attempt to preserve natural resources for future generations.
El Burro is organic wine: Organic agriculture is a crop production system that preserves soil, ecosystem and human health. It is rooted in ecological processes, biodiversity and the adaptation of farming cycles to local conditions, rather than in the application of chemicals and synthetic substances to the soil.
This is a natural wine that has been crafted using minimal human intervention. No sulphites are added in its production processes (sulphites act as preservatives, given their antioxidant and antibacterial properties). No selected yeasts are used either: instead, only indigenous yeasts are used. Because there is no clarification process involved, this wine is also vegan.
Last but not least, it has been certified in the Fair for Life program, which ensures fair working conditions for our winery employees.
