Santa Julia La Vaquita Natural 2022

Tasting Notes

Santa Julia is part of the Zuccardi empire (one of Argentina’s premiere wine houses), but a separate entity of its own. One of the points of differentiation between Zuccardi and Santa Julia is that Sebastion Zuccardi has very little to do with Santa Julia’s winemaking but is directly involved with overseeing the new natural wine project within the Santa Julia portfolio.

Natural wines seem to be quite fashionable these days, but for many traditional wine consumers they are perceived as being too funky and maybe a bit too esoteric for their tastes.  Not the case here with the natural wines from Santa Julia. These are clean and very well made without any of the trappings of the flaws embedded in many of the standard fare that can plague the category.

The Santa Julia 2022La Vaquita Clarete is an unusual blend of 80 % Malbec and 20% Torrontes that were co-fermented. Although the combination of such a high percentage of white grapes mixed with red grapes in the blend appears to be odd, it works perfectly. With the warmer weather fast approaching this is a great call and will work perfectly on its own or with food. The Torrontes gives aromatic lift adding freshness and a floral note while the palate is beautifully balanced on its medium bodied frame. It’s a lovely drop and for $15.99 a bottle, there’s a lot to like here.

Santa Julia La Vaquita Clarete 2022

92 pts Wine Advocate
A new “clarete” light red from the “natural” range, the 2022 La Vaquita Natural is the first vintage for this unusual blend of 80% Malbec and 20% Torrontés that fermented together; the Malbec was with full clusters, and they do a semi-carbonic maceration. It has a pale color, with notes from the two varieties, with violets and orange blossom, and it is fine-boned, light and fresh but with clout, with 13.8% alcohol and fine tannins. This is a very gastronomical light red with tasty, clean flavors and aromas and a velvety mouthfeel. Very easy to drink. This is the first vintage from organic grapes and fermented with indigenous yeasts. 20,000 bottles were filled in August 2022 after three months in stainless steel.

A very clean and scented co-fermentation of 80% malbec and 20% torrontes. Savory plums, cherries, peaches and some pomegranate to the nose. Fresh, smooth and quite drinkable. From organically grown grapes. No sulphites added.

Winemaker Notes

“We are proud of this range of wines and they are born from a way of thinking and doing that we have in the family, always looking
for identity, quality, love, and respect for our land. Their names are born from our inspiration on this earth. La Vaquita is named in honor of Olivia, a baby cow given to my niece to join the farm animals we have in Santa Julia.” – Julia Zuccardi

Santa Julia La Vaquita is the first Organic and Natural Claret-style wine from Bodega Santa Julia and reflects our mission to develop
wines in an organic and sustainable way, coexisting with the environment instead of attacking it. It represents the maximum expression of the variety and its surroundings. Allowing us to enjoy its potential in a more natural way.

Natural Wines are those that have as little human intervention as possible from the vineyard to its production. Sulfites are not added. Natural yeasts are used, and the wine is bottled unfiltered. Classic fermentation with indigenous yeasts and co-fermentation of Malbec and Torrontés with indigenous yeasts, from our organic vineyards in Maipú, short maceration of 15 days.
