Stark-Conde Monk Stone Chenin Blanc 2023

About this Wine

Chenin Blanc is a relatively rare variety in our area of Stellenbosch but the higher, cooler slopes and granite soils are well suited to producing an intense, mineral style. This complex, finely-crafted Chenin Blanc was matured in neutral French oak barrels to build texture on the palate. This wine is certified organic. The Monk Stone Chenin Blanc gets its name from the large boulder which punctuates the dramatic vineyard block, situated at an elevation of approximately 300m. Hovering high above the valley, this bush-vine vineyard is planted along dramatic terraces which were sculpted to prevent rain erosion. The wave and ripple patterns formed by these terraces, together with the large boulder recall a traditional Japanese rock garden, and hence the name “Monk Stone”.

Six years into organic farming, the vineyards are in excellent shape and fared well in an interesting season. Warm, but not excessive, temperatures during early harvest produced quality fruit with enhanced aromatics and richness. This vintage produced concentrated white wines with good texture.

The grapes were hand-picked in several vineyard passes and chilled before pressing. De-stemming, crushing and light pressing then took place followed by overnight settling of the juice. A portion of the grapes was whole-bunch pressed to help preserve the acidity. This complex, finely-crafted Chenin Blanc was matured in neutral French oak barrels. The wine was on its lees for 9
months and given regular stirrings. After settling naturally, the wine was carefully racked and then given a light fining and
bottled with no filtration.

94 pts Greg Sherwood MW Sept 2024
The wines from the 2023 vintage continue to surprise with their exceptional quality and concentration, and this impressively complex Chenin Blanc from Stark Conde is no exception. The aromatics are intricate and wonderfully expressive, packed with hints of white peach, green honeydew melon, Granny Smith apples and delicate sweet citrus notes over subtle savoury fresh fennel root and dried herb nuances. The palate is particularly mouthwatering and tangy, bright acids well balanced by the vibrant white peach and yellow apple pastille fruit concentration. A wine that always spends almost a year on its fine lees, the palate showing the resulting textural depth and breadth, finishing with great intensity, energy and a tangy fruit persistence. Another masterclass in serious Chenin Blanc from the Jonkershoek Valley’s most revered winery. Drink on release and over the next 6 to 8+ years.

93 pts Tim Atkin MW 2024
Monk Stone uses grapes from a cool, south-facing site close to Stark-Condé’s Jonkershoek Valley base and is suitably chiselled, focused and refreshing. Subtly barrel fermented in 10% new barrels, it’s taut and almost Chablis-like, with wax and citrus zest flavours and a fennel undertone. 2025-30

Lemon verbena nuance to apricot and nartjie aromas. Crunchy and fruit driven with good body.
