96 pts Tim Atkin MW 2019
Perched at the top of Jonkershoek Valley at 590 metres Oude Nektar is one of the most spectacular vineyards in Stellenbosch and produces a wine to match. Big, bold and dense, it has a meaty, Saint Estephe quality to it combining fynbos aromas with 70% new wood and layers of dark, plush inky fruit. Stunning. 2022 – 2235.
4 ½ Stars 2020 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Tealeaf & hedgerow fruit mark 16 (94 pts) only the third from farm’s highest vineyard (500m), wiped out by fire in 2009 & replanted. Like 15 (93 pts) controlled power, elegant & svelte. Dabs petit verdot, cab franc & malbec. Fruit assimilates 70% new oak (20 months) effortlessly.
This is the third vintage of this wine after re-planting. Our idea has always been to make what is basically a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from this unique vineyard. It is not a true single-vineyard in that we have blended in barrel selections of the best of our other vineyards. The Cabernet has a very intense cassis aroma with unique citrus-rind notes. It has a firmer tannin structure than many of our wines, but still with the elegance for which Jonkershoek Valley wines are known.
