4 ½ Stars 2019 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Dry 16 (93 pts) vintage is rich & generous but also shows restraint, suppleness. Nuanced black fruit, spice, cocoa & graphite. Basket pressed with portion wholebunch, supportively oaked (French 40% new, 22 months). Like other reds, unfined/unfiltered.
From our well-known Three Pines vineyard, just above the Cabernet. The grapes were hand-harvested and hand-sorted and fermented in open tanks with hand-punchdowns throughout. Matured for 20 months in small French oak, 40% new. An elegant style of Syrah with a fine mouthfeel that one critic described as having “the texture of crushed violets.” This was an extremely small vintage: only 3,245 bottles were produced.
