We don’t see much of the wines from this esteemed producer out of Western Australia’s Margaret River region. So when this opportunity came our way we knew we needed to step up and fire off a short missive. Margaret River is one of the premium places in the world for exceptional Cabernet and Stella Bella plays this to form with their 2018 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Even though it’s not known very well here in the US Stella Bella is considered one of Australia’s top wine producing estates having earned a 5 Star rating from James Halliday. Margaret River and high quality Cabernet Sauvignon go hand in hand and here’s an opportunity to see why. Some extra bottle age has brought this into its sweet spot with a number of years of great drinking in front of it. Big reviews from numerous critics showcase the sizzle of what’s in the bottle, all attesting to the fact that this Margaret river Cabernet ticks all the boxes. Beautifully poised and showcasing the essence of what Margaret River can deliver for Cabernet this is drinking gorgeously as we speak.

Heady herbaceous leaf, cedar, spearmint and fresh dark berry leads you to a spiced palate laced with chocolate oak, bilberry, cassis and supple rolling tannins. (Decanter World of Wine Awards)

In typical Stella style, this is a bright, lucid, textural and approachable Cab sprinkled with red and black fruit, mint, black pepper and dark chocolate. Somewhere between medium and full bodied, there’s fleshy fruit, a briny savoriness, well-placed tannins and a fresh lift of acidity. Drinking deliciously now, it could also age until around 2032.

This is quite a leafy and arboreal take on cabernet with redcurrant and red-berry aromas and flavors. Some blueberry at the finish. Bright acidity and very vibrant red-berry and plum flavors and some oak toast to seal it all in. Drink or hold.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (in contrast to the 2017) shows only faint herbal nuances, instead delivering mouthwatering notes of red raspberries and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, it shows greater richness and a lovely silky-textured depth, finishing long, with delicate hints of cocoa powder. It should drink well for a decade.
Our Cabernet Sauvignon vines are planted on gravel soils know as Forest Grove gravelly loams. These ancient and unique soils that are specifically named after the Forest Grove area in Southern Margaret River. These soils drain exceptionally well to restrict vine vigour, allowing the fruit to ripen in the beautiful Margaret River sunshine and to cool in the refreshing afternoon sea breezes from the Southern and Indian Oceans. Stella Bella Cabernet is a blend of the best of our five Southern Margaret River vineyards ranging in vine age from 25-40 years old.
Plums, cherries and sweet red fruits spring from the glass in an alluring perfume, supported by delicate hints of fresh mint and vanilla oak.
Medium bodied yet balanced by prettiness, suppleness and salivating structure. Vibrant raspberries, cherry fruits and hints of fresh cranberry are complimented by savoury forest floor, earthy characters and delicate notes of vanillin from the beautiful French Oak.
