The Thorne and Daughters portfolio has only been around since 2012, but the husband and wife team of John and Tasha Seccombe, have been making stellar wines from the get-go. Specializing in white wines, which comprise about 70% of their 4,000 case production, their 2020 Rocking Horse white is another top shelf offering that’s a multi-regional blend comprised of Roussanne, Semillon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Clairette Blanche, respectively. This unique amalgamation of varietals may sound strange but it’s what’s in the bottle that counts and this is some serious juice. As good as many South African reds are, the whites are equally as good, if not better. This particular white blend has been one of the revelations as to how good Cape whites are, a strong testament to the exceptional quality coming out of the Cape. There’s not much to go around so as always first come first served.

The 2020 Rocking Horse is a blend of 35% Sémillon, 28% Roussanne, 16% Chardonnay, 15% Chenin Blanc and 6% Clairette Blanche, whole-bunch-pressed and matured in used oak. It has a well-defined, flor-like bouquet offering brioche, grilled walnut, bales of straw and smoke. The fabulous palate presents a sensual honeyed texture effortlessly counterbalanced by acidity. Very harmonious, revealing dried honey, walnut and ginger on the finish. This is a masterclass in winemaking and it will age brilliantly in bottle… if you can resist pulling that cork. Drink now-2040

Including grapes from the Ceres Plateau for the first time, Rocking Horse is a pan-regional blend of Semillon, Roussanne, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Clairette Blanche, with the harvest spread over a period of six weeks. Pear, citrus and stone fruit flavours combine to perfection here, with top notes of jasmine and wild herbs and a mineral, structured, slightly tannic core. 2021-26
Rocking Horse is our cornerstone wine and takes its name from a wooden rocking horse that we made for our daughters out of old oak barrel staves. This is our signature wine and it is where all our work comes together to make our most complete wine.
The wine is composed from a number of carefully selected vineyard sites in the Western Cape. Notes of hay, wild honey and nut brittle aromas on the nose lead into a rounded, intense palate of honeybush, yellow plums and a subtle gun flint smokiness with a long full bodied finish.
