Thorne & Daughters Rocking Horse White 2022

Tasting Notes

Cape white blends have been showing exceptional promise and are now perceived as some of the better white wines you will find coming out of the Western Cape. One of the more interesting versions we have tried over the past few years has been the Thorne and Daughters Rocking Horse white blend.  It over delivers for its price and it represents the new wave of Cape white blends that have been making it into our market the past few years. Thorne and Daughters’ Rocking Horse has been getting noteworthy critical attention that make many of their contemporaries envious of its success with a number of Platter 5 Stars showcasing the creative abilities of owner/winemaker John Secombe to produce such an intriguing wine with such consistency. The current release is a blend of  Roussanne, Semillon, Chenin, Chardonnay and Clairette, sourced from grapes  from throughout the Western Cape, Swartland, Stellenbosch and Franschkoek. Given 9 months in neutral oak this has an engaging aromatic profile and deep stone fruit flavors ending dry with a citric cut on the refined finish, showcasing elegance and precision that really makes it stand out. This is a top flight wine that not only delivers in quality but its pricing is appealing too, this is a delicious unique South African Cape white blend.

Thorne & Daughters White 2022

5 Stars 2024 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Outstanding example of new-wave Cape white blend, 22 (95 pts) fascinating medley of roussanne, semillon, chenin, chardonnay & clairette. Aromatic & multifaceted, like 21 (94 pts) & previous, with stonefruit depth & breadth, fine texture & an elegant, dry limy gripe. Swartland, Stellenbosch & Franschhoek grapes, 9 months in seasoned oak.

95 pts Tim Atkin MW 2023

Rocking Horse affords John Seccombe the chance to show his skills as a blender. Based on Semillon, with the remaining 65% made up of Roussanne, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Clairette Blanche, this seven vineyard cuvée uses grapes from five different regions. Pithy, tangy and very lightly wooded, it has wet stone, quince and green apple flavours and a twist of orange zest. 2024-28

Winemaker Notes

Rocking Horse is our cornerstone wine and takes its name from a wooden rocking horse that we made for our daughters out of old oak barrel staves. This is our signature wine and it is where all our work comes together to showcase our vision for a Cape White blend.

The wine is composed from a number of carefully selected vineyard sites in the Western Cape. A layered and complex nose reveals green pineapple, kumquat, nori, and lime leaf, leading into a nervy, focused palate of citrus, ginger and stone fruit with a long taut, slightly saline finish.

Semillon blanc – 35% Franschhoek – 39 years old – alluvial soils
Roussanne – 28% Stellenbosch / Paardeberg – 13 years old – decomposed granite / clay
Chenin blanc – 14% Paardeberg 43 years old – decomposed granite
Chardonnay – 13% Ceres Plateau 9 years old – clay
Clairette blanche – 10% Worcester 44 years old – alluvial soils
