Located high up on the south facing slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain overlooking the Helsghoote Pass, in without a doubt one of the Western Cape’s most beautiful settings, Tokara makes an impressive lineup of both reds and whites. The jewel of the lineup and the one that impresses the most is their upper-tier Director’s Reserve Red, a Cabernet Sauvignon dominated red Bordeaux blend. Over the last decade plus its consistency in high quality has earned its stripes and it is now recognized as one one of the Cape’s finest for its genre. Always highly reviewed, the just released 2019, keeping true to form with previous vintages, has already garnished some pretty high praise, 94 pts Tim Atkin MW, with many more to come in due time. We anticipate another big Platter review shortly as well.
Taken from the estate’s best blocks, this is always a beautifully balanced wine and the 2019 plays to that tune perfectly with its core of darker fruit and deftly integrated tannins. Just now giving hints of what’s to come this should drink beautifully over the next 5 plus years. This is another one of those wines that is quite limited and that makes it a great gift option or something to share with someone who appreciates fine wines.

Tokara use their best blocks to produce this estate blend before making a further barrel selection. Marrying Cabernet Sauvignon with 30% Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with 48% new wood, it’s a fine floral, assertively wooded Bordeaux blend with blackcurrant pastille and blueberry flavours and well-judged tannins. 2023-29.
This wine is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, 9% Merlot,
6% Cabernet Franc. The grapes originated from TOKARA’s premium vineyards on
the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain outside of Stellenbosch.
Only grapes from the best blocks and from the best parts of these blocks were used.
The average yield is between 5 and 10 t/ha. The grapes were hand-picked at optimal
ripeness between the 21st of February and the 3rd of April.
Displaying an appealing red claret colour with an intense centre and a ruby rim.
The nose showcases complex aromas including ripe red and black berry fruit with hints
of creamy cassis, cedar wood and toasted oak. The wine enters the palate with incredible
purity and focus. Flavours are those of dark cherry, blackberries and ripe plum skin.
Sumptuous and full there is a pleasant hint of spice on the mid-palate which leads to fine,
firm tannins on the finish.
