Olivia Grace is an unusual white blend of mostly Chenin Blanc with 40% Chardonnay, Roussanne, Riesling, Verdelho and Viognier. Lightly wooded, with an amphora component adding another layer of complexity, this has lime blossom and honeysuckle aromas, pear and lemon fruit and subtle patisserie spices. 2022-26
60% Chenin blanc, 12% Chardonnay, 12% Roussanne, 6% Riesling, 5% Verdelho and 5% Viognier
The backbone of this Cape White blend is Chenin blanc and the grapes making up this component are sourced from three old vineyard blocks: two sites in Darling and one in Stellenbosch. The Chardonnay is from a 15-year-old block in Stellenbosch on granite soil, producing some of the most characterful Chardonnay grapes in the area. The Riesling is from relatively old “semi-bush vines” planted in very arid sandy granitic soils in Stellenbosch. This vineyard in the Helderberg was planted in 1982 and it is a phenomenal blending component to use in this blend for its bright acidity and vibrant aromatics. This Riesling contributes incredible spice and floral notes of jasmine and emon-blossom. The Roussanne (from Slanghoek) contributes body, texture and delicious pear and quince aromas. The small component of Verdelho was sourced from the Swartland and the 5% Viognier is from Constantia grapes and it is an important component for aroma, fruit concentration and depth.
This wine was raised in predominantly old French oak, ranging from 225L to 600L size barrels; as well as 5% new French oak (the Viognier), and 6% in a clay amphora (the Riesling) for total maturation time of 8 months before it was blended and bottled. This is a carefully crafted Cape White blend with Chenin blanc as the core component, and the other varieties offering additional layers of fruit, aromatics, texture and freshness. It is an honest wine and the idea is to showcase the diversity of Western Cape soils and climates in one harmonious blend. Production of this spectacular vintage was only 6292 bottles.
