Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Tasting Notes

If you are a fan of wines from south of the equator and love well-made Cabernet Sauvignon, then Vasse Felix out of Western Australia’s Margaret River’s region should be an easily recognizable name. Vasse Felix has the enviable position of being one of Australia’s premiere producers of both world class Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. This Margaret River producer does  everything extremely well and one of their wines, the entry level Filius Cabernet Sauvignon, in certain vintages, can really shine making it one of the better value plays you will find on the varietal just about anywhere.

With its 2020 Filius Cabernet Sauvignon, Vasse Felix seems to have hit all the right notes having gathered in a plethora of solid reviews from numerous critics, and one must remember that in a previous vintage the Filius Cabernet Sauvignon was a Wine Spectator Top 100 (2015 vintage – Wine #58 in 2018), so this particular label has a track record that it can bring exceptional quality with pricing to match. Margaret River is one of the top spots in the world for Cabernet Sauvignon and this one brings great value into the equation.

Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

93 pts Wine Spectator ‘Smart Buys’ February 2023

Offers wild berry flavors that are plush and elegant, mingling with notes of forest floor, sage, dried mushroom and palo santo, plus a touch of peppermint oil. The tannins are supple and creamy, with an elegant yet powerful profile. Drink now through 2031

92 pts James Suckling November 2022

Blackcurrants, sage and hints of fresh herbs on the nose. Medium-bodied. Firm tannins and a fresh, vivid finish. Linear and delicious. Drink now. Screw cap.

90 pts Wine Enthusiast Dec 2022

Heady notes of sweetly spiced oak and chocolate mingle with cassis, violet and mint. Tannins are a little chunky, and acidity is pinched, but there’s lovely savory spice and red fruit tang right through to the finish. A solid, youthful Cab bearing the classic Vasse style, but this reviewer recommends paying a bit extra for the winery’s self-named middle tier bottling.

Winemaker Notes

A remarkably ripe and soft wine. The individual batches were destemmed and fermented as whole berries using only wild yeast residing on the fruit. Cabernet parcels underwent a suitable duration of maceration to extract a fine backbone of structural tannins and blackcurrant laden fruit. Malbec and Petit Verdot were pressed off skins earlier to maintain a soft and luscious mouth feel. The resulting wines were matured in fine French oak for 12 months prior to blending. Limited racking was used to help preserve the delicate wild characters captured in this low intervention approach.

A deep perfume with blackcurrant, blueberry and coffee mocha complexities. Notes of dusty earth and woody perennial herbs mingle with hints of nori, dried forest leaves and wild mushrooms to create an inviting aroma.

A light fragrant entrance with blackcurrant, raspberry and pot pourri builds to earthy complexities and fine dry dusty tannins which serve to frame the fruit. A comfortable, soft, juicy body and tannin profile finishes the wine fresh and long.
